“LORRY FARE HAS NOT BEEN ADJUSTED” – GPRTU CHAIR DECLARE.

BIBIANI – The Chairman for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of Bibiani, Nana Kyem Badu, has dismissed speculations of an increase in transport fares in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality.

According to him, the mother association has not approved any increment in transport fares, and therefore any fare hike by drivers is unlawful.

Speaking in an interview with Akuapem-Hann, Nana Badu cautioned drivers who on their own volition have increased fares to desist from the act immediately.

He described the act as unscrupulous and warned that such drivers will be sanctioned if they fail to comply until any increment is officially confirmed and communicated to them by the national secretariat.

He further called on the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Assembly to crack the whip on non-law abiding drivers locally known as ‘waawaa’.

Nana Badu stated that the ‘waawaa’ drivers do not belong to any of the recognized transport associations and therefore load passengers by the roadside instead of the approved lorry stations.

He opined that if the Assembly ensures all ‘waawaa’ drivers are made to join various transport associations, it will curtail the unlawful and arbitrary adjustment of fares in the municipality.

The GPRTU Chairman also urged passengers to board vehicles from the lorry stations instead of patronizing ‘waawaa’ drivers. He explained that boarding station vehicles makes it easier for passengers to retrieve forgotten items, which is difficult when using roadside vehicles.

Finally, he warned drivers against reckless driving and unnecessary overspeeding, advising them to prioritize their lives and the lives of passengers.
