Decades of Neglect: Dumakyi Community Appeals for Urgent Government Intervention

Decades of Neglect: Dumakyi Community Appeals for Urgent Government Intervention.

Dumakyi, a farming community near Ankaase in the Afigya Kwabre South District of Ghana, is home to more than 500 residents.

Yet despite its population size and agricultural contribution, the community continues to live without the most basic social amenities—an absence that has made life extremely difficult for its people.

In an interview with our reporter, Okesieba Nana Kwaku Asare, residents expressed their deep frustration over what they described as long-standing neglect by successive governments. They revealed that since the establishment of Dumakyi, the community has never had electricity, not even solar lighting.

This situation has crippled economic activities, security, and education, especially during the night.

Access to potable drinking water and a health facility also remains a major challenge.

Residents shared heartbreaking accounts of pregnant women who must be carried on foot to Ankaase—the nearest town—about 50 miles away whenever they go into labour. This dangerous journey, they said, has led to the needless deaths of innocent lives.

The residents also complained that politicians only visit the community during election seasons and disappear once the elections are over, leaving behind the same unaddressed problems.

Speaking to some of the students in the community, they explained that the lack of electricity has made learning extremely difficult.

During Information and Communication Technology (ICT) lessons, they said their teachers are forced to draw computer parts and accessories on the chalkboard, as there are no computers available.

According to them, this makes it nearly impossible to understand practical lessons and puts them at a disadvantage compared to students in other communities.

They further added that the absence of electricity has contributed to poor network connectivity, making phone calls and access to information very difficult.

The people of Dumakyi are therefore appealing passionately to the Government of Ghana to intervene.

They emphasized that they are also Ghanaians and deserve to enjoy the benefits of national development.

They added that since the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Mahama, has expressed his commitment to “reset Ghana,” Dumakyi must also be included in that national transformation.

Residents say they remain hopeful that their cry for support will finally reach the authorities and bring long-awaited development to their community.
