Nsuta Circuit Court Jails Ex-Convict Five Years For GH¢195 Theft

Nsuta —The Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region has sentenced a driver and ex-convict, Douglas Nyarnor, to five years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing GH¢195.

The sentence was handed down by the presiding judge, His Lordship Simon Nketiah Gagah, on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

Prosecuting, Detective Chief Inspector Favour Adukpoe told the court that the complainant, Obed Gyamfi, an auto-rickshaw rider popularly known as Pragya rider, resides at Nsuta.

According to the prosecution, on October 27, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m., Gyamfi parked his pragya in front of the provision shop of a witness, Deborah Ankamah alias Maabena, near the Jeduako-Birem taxi rank, and was engaged in a conversation with her.

The complainant reportedly noticed the accused, a resident of Jeduako near Nsuta, loitering around his vehicle and kept a close eye on him.

The prosecution said Nyarnor, unaware he was being monitored, opened the unlocked money box of the pragya where the complainant had kept his daily sales and removed the entire amount before walking away.

The complainant, with the assistance of the witness, quickly confronted him and demanded to know what he had taken from the money box, but Nyarnor denied any wrongdoing.

Upon checking, Gyamfi discovered that GH¢195, representing his sales for the day, was missing. A search conducted on the accused at the scene reportedly led to the discovery of the GH¢195, crumpled and concealed in his pocket.

The complainant spotted a police officer nearby and alerted him, leading to Nyarnor’s arrest.

In his caution statement, Nyarnor reportedly admitted to the offence in the presence of an independent witness but claimed he stole only GH¢45 to buy drinking water.

Further investigations revealed that the accused had previously been convicted on two separate occasions.

The prosecution told the court that on July 4, 2022, Nyarnor and two others were arraigned before the same Nsuta Circuit Court, then presided over by Her Ladyship Mrs. Winnie Amoatey Owusu, on charges of conspiracy, stealing and abetment of crime. Nyarnor and one Prince Frimpong alias Ranking pleaded guilty and were convicted.

Again, on January 16, 2023, Nyarnor was involved in another theft case, for which he was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour by the same court.

In passing sentence on the latest offence, the court noted that although a three-year term could have been imposed, the accused’s previous convictions and failure to reform despite earlier custodial sentences warranted a harsher punishment to deter him and others.

The court subsequently sentenced Douglas Nyarnor to five years imprisonment with hard labour, emphasizing that his repeated involvement in criminal activity showed he had failed to learn from his previous convictions.
