Anyinasin Residents Reject Proposed Mining Activities, Vow To Protect Farmlands And Water Bodies

Residents of Akyem Anyinasin in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region have rejected plans to introduce mining activities in the community, warning that they will resist any attempt to destroy their farmlands and water bodies.

The position was reiterated by Anyinasin Citizens Against Mining during a mini durbar on Friday, November 6, 2026, following a media tour of some proposed mining sites, including Abahasu and areas around the Bomeng River.

A member of the group, Mr Maxwell Larbi, accused Abuakwa North MCE, Hon. Charles Yeboah Darko, of allegedly collaborating with the community’s chief to introduce a community mining initiative. He called for the youth to be consulted before any decision is taken.

The group’s convener, Mr William Boakye, describe Anyinasin as a food basket of the region and warned that mining could threaten agriculture and residents’ livelihoods. He also questioned the chief’s reported change of position on mining.

Meanwhile, Mr Kwadwo Atta Apeakorang, Founder of Save the Nation for Future Leaders, dismissed suggestions that his opposition was motivated by a personal dispute with the chief, insisting that his campaign was aimed at protecting the environment.

He appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene before tensions escalate.

Other residents at the durbar also called for the proposed mining initiative to be halted, insisting that the community’s farmlands, water bodies and agricultural resources must be protected.
