Ahafo Ano South West Assembly Breaks Deadlock, Elects Presiding Member in Decisive Third Vote
The prolonged impasse that gripped the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly has finally been resolved, as Assembly Members successfully elected a Presiding Member following two earlier failed attempts characterized by tension and procedural breakdown.
At a crucial third sitting convened to settle the leadership stalemate, Hon. Paul Akwasi Amegboe emerged victorious, securing an emphatic mandate from his colleagues.
Out of 42 Assembly Members who participated in the exercise excluding the District Chief Executive (DCE), who is not permitted to vote he garnered 33 votes, a commanding majority that underscored a renewed sense of consensus within the Assembly.
The path to this outcome, however, was far from smooth.
The second meeting, initially intended to produce a Presiding Member, descended into chaos amid heightened emotions and sharp divisions among members.
The situation reportedly deteriorated to the extent that some Assembly Members invoked curses during the proceedings an that reflected the polarization and frustration surrounding the process.
Determined to restore order and uphold democratic principles, stakeholders reconvened for a third meeting under tighter supervision and a renewed commitment to decorum.
The session was chaired by the Mpasaaso Manhene, Nana Tabiri Gyansa, whose presence and leadership were instrumental in ensuring a transparent, and orderly electoral process.
The successful election is widely regarded as a pivotal breakthrough, marking the end of weeks of uncertainty and administrative inertia.
It is expected to reinvigorate the Assembly’s operations and facilitate the smooth execution of its legislative and developmental mandate.
In his post-election remarks, Hon. Amegboe expressed profound gratitude to his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him.
He called for unity and reconciliation, urging members to transcend their differences and collaborate effectively for the advancement of the district.
“I am deeply honored by this endorsement,” he stated. “This victory is not mine alone but for the entire Assembly.
It is time we put the past behind us and work collectively towards the progress and development of Ahafo Ano South West.”
The District Chief Executive, Hon. Abubakar Sadiq, also commended Assembly Members for their eventual conduct, praising the peaceful nature of the final vote.
He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of the Assembly in driving development.
The election of a Presiding Member is a constitutional requirement that enables the Assembly to function fully, including the approval of budgets, formulation of by-laws, and oversight of development projects.
With this hurdle now cleared, residents and stakeholders alike are optimistic about a more stable and productive governance environment in the district.
