TRAGEDY HITS VOLTA REGION, AS 15 PERSONS KILLED, 25 OTHERS INJURED IN A FATAL ROAD CRASH ON PEKI- ASIKUMA HIGHWAY.

 

At least 15 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating road crash on the Peki–Asikuma Highway in the Volta Region.

The accident, which occurred at about 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2 involved two commercial vehicles carrying a total of 40 passengers. Several others sustained injuries in the collision and are currently receiving treatment at various  health facilities.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service responded to the scene and successfully rescued 25 survivors who had been trapped in the wreckage.

The injured victims were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the morgue.

Providing details of the incident, the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, ADO1 Hope Bedzrah, said preliminary investigations indicate that the crash resulted from a head-on collision between the two vehicles.

According to him, emergency responders arrived at the scene and immediately commenced rescue operations to save passengers trapped in both vehicles.

“When they got there, they realised that the two vehicles had been involved in a head-on collision. Preliminary investigations at the scene suggest that there were 40 occupants in the two vehicles.
