Make Annual Driving Training Mandatory for Trotro Drivers, Offinso North MP Urges.
Hon. Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, Member of Parliament for Offinso North, is calling for annual driving training to be made compulsory for commercial drivers in Ghana.
Speaking with the media on Thursday, the MP said mandatory yearly training is critical to reducing “human errors that dominate Ghana’s road accident statistics.”
“Annual driving training should absolutely be mandatory for trotro drivers to curb the human errors that dominate Ghana’s road accident statistics,” Dr. Asamoah stated.
Trotros account for a large share of public transport in Ghana, but they’re also frequently linked to crashes attributed to speeding, wrongful overtaking, and driver fatigue.
The MP’s proposal targets retraining and refresher courses each year to keep drivers updated on road safety regulations and defensive driving.
Dr. Asamoah called on the government, highway authorities, the Ghana Police Service and all relevant agency to implement the policy, also he emphasized that stricter driver education is needed if Ghana is to reverse rising road fatalities.
The National Road Safety Authority reported over 2,000 deaths from road crashes in 2025, with human error cited as the leading caused.
