Assin North: Galamsey Pit Collapse Kills Two, Leaves One Fighting for Life

Assin North: Galamsey Pit Collapse Kills Two, Leaves One Fighting for Life.

Dansame, Assin North — Two miners died and a third is in critical condition after an illegal mining pit caved in Thursday afternoon in the Central Region.

The collapse happened around April 23 as eight miners worked inside a newly dug pit at Dansame. Witnesses say the pit walls gave way suddenly, trapping three people under soil and debris.

Residents and fellow miners rushed to help, but rescue efforts were slowed by unstable ground and the depth of the collapse. After several minutes of digging, all three victims were pulled out.

A 22-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were pronounced dead. The third victim, a man, survived but remains in critical condition at a nearby health facility. Doctors say he is receiving emergency treatment.

The bodies have been taken to the New Edubiase Government Hospital morgue for identification and preservation.

Edward Fireson, Assin North District Director of NADMO, confirmed the incident. He said the organization is stepping up measures to curb illegal mining in the area.

Police have opened investigations into the collapse. NADMO officials are also expected to assess the site for safety and regulatory breaches.
