ECG Cracks Down on Unauthorized Meter Transfers

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a stern warning to the public against unauthorized relocation of electricity meters, emphasizing that such actions are illegal and can lead to serious consequences.

According to ECG, each meter is assigned to a specific location and can only be transferred with official approval.

ECG’s General Manager for External Communications, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, explained that meter relocations are governed by strict protocols and can only be carried out by ECG staff following a formal request.

Exceptions are made for movable structures such as containers and kiosks, but only within the same district and with formal permission from ECG.

Dr. Ayiku warned that unauthorized meter transfers can interfere with billing accuracy, disrupt service delivery, and may lead to legal consequences.

He emphasized that the company is stepping up public education efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of unauthorized meter transfers and to ensure customers are better informed about ECG’s operations.

The ECG reiterates that meter transfers for immovable structures are strictly prohibited, and any attempts to do so will be met with the full force of the law.

Customers are advised to seek formal permission from ECG before attempting to relocate their meters to avoid any disruptions to their service.
