PRESS STATEMENT BY CONCERNED CITIZENS OF OFFINSO NORTH DISTRICT

PRESS STATEMENT BY CONCERNED CITIZENS OF OFFINSO NORTH DISTRICT Date:30th June 2025, Monday

Nananom, Honourable Member of Parliament, District Chief Executive, Honourable Assembly Members, Unit Committee Members, Members of the Media, Ladies and Gentlemen,

We sincerely thank all of you for honouring our invitation, especially the various media houses that have made time to be here. Your presence underscores the importance of the matter we are about to address.

We, the concerned citizens of the Offinso North District, specifically from Akumadan, have convened this press conference to register our deep concern and dissatisfaction with the recent series of unjust and alarming arrest in Akumadan

On Wednesday, 21st May 2025, at approximately 6:37 p.m., two residents, Paul Kofi Sarfo and Kwame Nkrumah, were arrested under unclear circumstances and forcibly taken away in a blue pick-up vehicle. Just this past Saturday, two more individuals, Kwame Kwarteng(Abusua) and Alhassan, were also arrested in a similar manner.

These arrests, which occur without any prior notice or adherence to lawful procedure, are instilling fear and panic in our community. They resemble the unjust and arbitrary detentions seen in apartheid-era Soweto, South Africa, where people were seized without due process or respect for their basic rights and dignity.

We therefore ask: Is Ghana not a democratic nation governed by the Constitution and the rule of law? In any democratic society, individuals suspected of wrongdoing must be treated lawfully—invited or arrested through transparent and just procedures.

Regrettably, what we are witnessing today falls far below those democratic standards. These troubling incidents raise serious concerns:

No prior notice is given to the individuals before they are arrested.

Those claiming to be officers of the NIB or police do not show any form of identification or official credentials.

Families of the arrested persons are not informed of their destination or whereabouts, leaving them in distress.

One particularly shocking case involved a respected elderly NPP member who was allegedly picked up by unidentified individuals from his carpentry workshop. His body was later found on a farm, surrounded by a mattock and cutlass—even though he was not known to be a farmer. This incident has left the entire community in disbelief and fear.

Implications of the Current Situation:

A deepening sense of fear and insecurity has gripped our community.

Many residents are unable to go about their daily routines, afraid they may be the next victims.

The youth, in particular, now feel vulnerable and targeted, a situation which could easily lead to unrest, misconduct, and civil disorder if not urgently addressed.

Our Humble Appeal:

We respectfully call upon:

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana,

Hon. Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, Member of Parliament for Offinso North,

Hon. Ceasar Ofosu Acheampong, District Chief Executive,

…to swiftly intervene and take urgent steps to halt these arbitrary and unauthorized arrests.

We also appeal to the police and all relevant security agencies to adhere strictly to lawful procedures by formally inviting or summoning persons suspected of any wrongdoing, in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Ghana.

In conclusion, we, the concerned citizens of Akomadan in the Offinso North District, remain committed to upholding the laws of the land, protecting our communities, and maintaining peace and order. Ghana is a nation of justice and democracy, and together, we must ensure that no citizen is subjected to fear, intimidation, or unlawful treatment.

Thank you all, and may God bless Offinso North and the Republic of Ghana.
