Poultry Farm Workers Beat Mentally Challenged Young Man To Death At Kayera In Offinso South

Tension is brewing at Kayera in the Offinso South Municipality following the beating to death of a young man popularly known as SM, in his late 30s, by workers of a poultry farm located between Awisem and Kayera.

Information gathered by Dominic Duut confirms that the deceased, identified as Mr. Yaw, popularly known as SM, who was mentally challenged, went to the farm area in search of food, locally referred to as “akokofunu”, but was accused by the farm workers of attempting to steal a fowl.

The workers beat him severely, leaving him in a critical condition.

The Assembly Member for Kayera-Awisem, Hon. Iddrisu, together with some elders, reported the incident to the police, and the victim was rushed to a hospital at Offinso for treatment. He, however, could not survive and was pronounced dead.

The farm is also unregistered, according to information gathered from the community.

Following the death, some youth of the Kayera community went to the farm late in the night and attacked the poultry farm workers in retaliation, escalating tension in the area.

Police are expected to investigate both the killing of the young man and the subsequent retaliatory attack to bring all persons involved to book.

Residents and community leaders have appealed for calm and urged the youth to desist from taking the law into their own hands and allow the police to handle the matter.

Hon. Iddrisu and the elders have called on the police to ensure a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased and his family.
