Fire Guts Girls’ Dormitory at Wa Islamic SHS; Firefighters Battle to Contain Blaz

WA, Upper West Region  A raging fire has engulfed part of the girls’ dormitory of the Wa Islamic Senior High School (SHS) Sunday evening, triggering panic on campus.

Two fire tenders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are currently at the scene, working frantically to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the dormitory block.

According to preliminary information available to this portal, the fire has so far involved one house of the girls’ dormitory. Firefighters are concentrating efforts on creating a firewall to protect the adjoining houses.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. It is also unclear whether students were in the dormitory at the time of the outbreak, as most students are often at evening prep.

Students and staff have been evacuated from the affected block as personnel from the GNFS and school authorities try to bring the situation under control. Thick smoke could be seen billowing from the facility as of the time of filing this report.

Officials from the Ghana Education Service, NADMO and the Wa Municipal Assembly are expected to visit the scene to assess the situation.
