Private Security Guard Association Condemns Shooting Incident at Dome Kwabenya
The President of the Private Security Guard Association of Ghana, Roland Obibah Mensah, has condemned the gun shooting incident at Dome Kwabenya, stating that private security companies in Ghana are not legally permitted to use firearms.
Speaking with the media with Apiah-Kubi on Thursday, June 25, 2026, Obibah Mensah explained that private security operators are governed by strict measures regarding firearms.
“We operate as bodyguards, escorts, and perform institutional duties where we are trained to be conscious and to use guns for a specific purpose, essentially when it comes to escorting and bodyguarding,” Obibah Mensah said.
According to him, while individuals may legally acquire and register firearms for personal protection, private security firms cannot arm guards and allow them to carry the weapons as personal security tools.
“Private security companies are not permitted to carry firearms. It is simple, and the guards know,” he stated.
He said L.I. 1571, which bans private guards from bearing firearms, is long overdue for amendment.
“You cannot display firearms in public just like that. It hurts me a lot that the incident involved one of our companies,” Obibah Mensah said.
His comments come amid the Dome Kwabenya incident and the Interior Minister’s directive that private security guards have no right to use firearms.
Obibah Mensah expressed disappointment at the conduct of the guards, describing it as unprofessional.
He further stated that the rising crime rate is overwhelming, and many people want to use arms for protection.
However, he warned that careless use of firearms could trigger security threats in the country.
He concluded by urging private security guards across the country to be cautious and vigilant. In addition to the basic training they receive, he said, they must also use their discretion.
“I urge you, private security guards, that you should not obey every order to act. It is not a crime to refuse an order,” Obibah Mensah stated.
