Minority MPs Demand Immediate Payment for Unpaid Nurses
The Minority members of the Health Committee of Parliament, led by Hon. Nana Ayew Afriyie, have issued an ultimatum to the government to pay the salaries of nurses who have worked for ten months without pay.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Hon. Afriyie emphasized that the payment must be made this month, or else the minority will withhold their approval.
According to Hon. Afriyie, there is an existing financial clearance that would enable the government to settle the outstanding salaries.
The Minority’s demand comes on the heels of an announcement by the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, that Cabinet has approved the payment of salaries to approximately 6,500 nurses and midwives who have not been paid since their posting ten months ago.
The Minister had assured that the payment would be made starting from November 2025. However, the Minority is urging the government to expedite the process and make the payment this month.
The nurses have been working without pay due to a delay in the processing of their financial clearance, despite having been recruited and posted to various health facilities across the country.
The situation has raised concerns about the welfare of the nurses and the impact on the healthcare system.
The Minority’s demand highlights the need for the government to prioritize the payment of the nurses’ salaries and ensure that they are not left in financial distress any further.
