Tribal Politics Has No Place in NPP, Dr. Bawumia Tells Supporters

Former Vice President and NPP flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party members to ignore propaganda suggesting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is tribalistic.

Speaking at Lapaz in Accra, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that tribalism and religious bigotry have no place in the party, which he said has a tradition of inclusiveness and merit-based leadership.

Dr. Bawumia made it clear that the NPP does not vote on tribal lines, stating, “For this tribal propaganda, I want to make it clear that we don’t vote on tribal lines. It is not part of our tradition.

” He cited the party’s historical roots, tracing back to the formation of the United Party (UP) in 1957 after the Avoidance of Discrimination Act.

The UP brought together various regional parties to oppose Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party (CPP).

Dr. Bawumia highlighted a significant example from the party’s history, where the Northern People’s Party (NPP), led by S.D. Dombo, had 13 seats, while Dr. K.A. Busia’s Ghana Congress Party had only one seat.

Despite this, Dr. Busia was chosen to lead the UP due to his competence and ability to help the party attain power.

This decision, Dr. Bawumia said, demonstrates the party’s commitment to unity, merit, and national interest over tribal or regional affiliations.

Dr. Bawumia’s message comes as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections. He emphasized the need for unity and collective commitment to the party’s rebuilding process, urging members to rise above internal divisions and focus on common goals.
