“Galamsey Menace: Barekese Residents Rally Against Illegal Mining, Seek Otumfuo’s Intervention”

Residents of Barekese in the Ashanti Region have taken to the streets to protest against the devastating effects of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, in their community.

The protesters are calling on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene and halt the galamsey activities, which they claim are polluting water bodies, destroying farmlands, and threatening the livelihoods of farming communities.

The residents are particularly concerned about the alleged involvement of their chief, Nana Amoapem Brenya, and the Odikro of Yad, Nana Atta, in the galamsey activities.

They claim that the two chiefs have sold farmlands to illegal miners, despite the Asantehene’s well-known opposition to galamsey.

The protesters are demanding that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II investigate the matter and take decisive action to protect their community and environment.

The galamsey menace has been a pressing issue in Ghana, with many communities suffering from the environmental and economic impacts of illegal mining.

The Asantehene has previously spoken out against galamsey, emphasizing the need for collective action to address the issue.

In a recent statement, he called on the legal community to take a proactive role in tackling the galamsey menace and protecting the nation’s water supply.
