Foreigners Overstaying their Visas, Prostituting and Engaging in Retail Business in Parts of Wa

The Upper West Region has become lucrative for foreigners who have taken the laws into the own hands by Overstaying 90 days maximum visas issued to them per ECOWAS Laws and engaging in illegal businesses including prostitution and retail business.

Some of these foreigners have gone to the length of owning registered Motorbikes, sim cards including merchant numbers used for receiving payments for goods and services, these phone numbers under normal circumstances cannot be registered and used without a valid citizens card popularly known as the Ghana Card.

Also, most of these foreign girls engaged in prostitution are based in Kambali Maxixco Gardens and Odo Hotel in Nakore where they ply their trade.

These Ladies mostly Nigerians have been in the Upper West Region for a very long time with several questions being asked as to whether the Ghana Immigration service is aware of their operations, some of these Ladies have extended their trade to Bole in the savannah region where they sell their bodies for between Ghc50-200 depending on the conditions.

It can be recalled that a TV3 Ghana News Documentary ‘Sperm Merchant’ aired 8th day of March, 2023 at 9:00pm on sex trade exposed an illicit business of selling semens of men for as low as Ghc100 by some prostitutes for money in Odo Hotel, a hospitality company in Wa.

The Upper West Regional Immigration Command deported Sex Workers in In September 2021 but new group resurfaced.

Lastly, several foreigners are Into obvious retail businesses on our Principal streets including Nigeriens, Burkinabes, Nigerians etc contrary in Ghana Contrary to the Ghana Investment Promotion Law (Act 865), which frown on foreigners engaging in the retail business.

The GIPC law states that, any foreigner who wanted to do business in Ghana was required to invest a minimum of US$1 million and employed at least 12 Ghanaian

citizens.
