Ashanti Regional Minister Confirms Recovery of Black Box from Crashed Military Helicopter

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced the successful recovery of the black box from the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The crash claimed the lives of eight high-ranking government and military officials.

According to Dr. Amoakohene, a team of investigators led by the Ghana Air Force, with assistance from local residents and the Assembly Member for the area, successfully located the black box at the crash site.

The recovered device will provide critical data to help determine the cause of the tragic incident.

The helicopter was en route to Obuasi to facilitate the official launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme when it went off radar, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation.

The recovery of the black box marks a significant step toward uncovering the events that led to the devastating aviation disaster.

The data retrieved from the black box will be analyzed in collaboration with international aviation experts to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash. Samples of the remains of the victims have been flown to South Africa for DNA analysis to aid in their identification.

The government has declared three days of national mourning, with all state flags ordered to fly at half-mast in honor of the victims. A book of condolence has also been opened for the public to pay tribute to the fallen leaders.
