Cardinal Turkson Urges African Bishops to Embody “Church-Family of God” Mission.
Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson has called on Africa’s Catholic bishops to rediscover their mission as the “Church-Family of God.”
Speaking at the 20th Plenary Assembly of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), Cardinal Turkson emphasized the importance of living out this identity in communion, love, and mutual care.
The concept of the Church as the Family of God, first proposed by the First African Synod in 1994, is more than a theological concept; it’s a way of life.
Cardinal Turkson encouraged bishops and faithful to cultivate right relationships with God and with one another, recognizing God as their Father, the Church as their Mother, and each other as brothers and sisters.
Reconciliation is a crucial aspect of this mission.
According to Cardinal Turkson, reconciliation allows the Church to heal broken bonds and live justly and in peace.
As such, the Church in Africa is called to proclaim and embody the Gospel of reconciliation, justice, and peace in every corner of the continent.
By embracing their identity as the Family of God, African Catholics can promote healing, unity, and peace in their communities.
Cardinal Turkson’s call to action serves as a reminder of the Church’s vital role in fostering a culture of love, care, and mutual support.
