Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference Speaks Out Against Electoral Violence and Judiciary Tensions

The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has issued a statement expressing concern over recent developments in the country, particularly with regards to electoral violence and the suspension of the Chief Justice.

The bishops condemn all forms of electoral violence, citing the recent incident in the Ablekuma North Constituency, and call for prompt and thorough investigations into such incidents.

The bishops urge the government to implement recommendations from previous commissions of enquiry into electoral violence and to hold perpetrators accountable.

They also emphasize the importance of an independent and credible judiciary, free from political interference, and caution against any actions that could compromise the independence or impartiality of the judiciary.

The statement highlights the need for peaceful elections, national unity, and respect for the rule of law.

The bishops urge political actors to prioritize national peace above partisan advantage and call on the Electoral Commission to sustain its efforts to bolster public confidence in the electoral process.

The bishops express concern over the suspension of the Chief Justice, emphasizing the need for due process and respect for the doctrine of separation of powers.

They caution that any precedent that appears to place the judiciary at the mercy of the executive risks eroding public trust in the judiciary.

The statement concludes with a call to action, urging all stakeholders to act with conscientiousness and to safeguard the rule of law and the dignity of the judiciary.

The bishops also reflect on the recent National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, hoping it will inspire a deeper national commitment to unity, reconciliation, and lasting peace.
