Circle Traders Protest Foreign Business Takeover, Demand Government Action
Ghanaian traders at Circle, a major marketplace in Accra, have shut down their shops in protest against what they describe as unfair competition from foreign traders, particularly Nigerians. The traders are demanding that authorities address their concerns before they reopen their shops.
The traders claim that foreigners are taking over the retail sector, particularly in the mobile phone and laptop accessories markets, in contravention of Ghana’s laws. They cite the Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) Act 865, which prohibits foreigners from engaging in retail trade in Ghana.
The traders, who are members of the Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA), are calling on the government to take action against foreigners who are allegedly engaging in retail trade illegally. They want the GIPC to activate its mandate and ensure that foreigners comply with the law.
The traders are also calling on the government to “reset” the local market and protect Ghanaians from unfair competition. They believe that immediate action is needed to address the issue and protect the interests of Ghanaians.
