Bono Regional Narcotics Control Commission Sounds Alarm Over Rising Demand for Illicit Drugs

The Bono Regional Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has expressed deep concern over the escalating demand for illicit drugs among the youth in the region.

According to NACOC, the increasing abuse of drugs such as Tramadol, Opioid (“RED”), Cannabis, alcohol, and “Shisha” poses a significant threat to the future and well-being of the young people.

The Commission has identified a ghetto in Sunyani Zongo as a notable hub for drug business and has marked it for a raid.

NACOC Regional Commander, PNCO Owusu Sarpong, raised concerns about the issue during the commemoration of World Drug Day.

The event highlighted the need for investment in prevention, education, healthcare, and criminal justice to address the problem holistically.

Data from the Bono Regional mental health department reveals that 367 patients were admitted with mental disorders in 2024 due to illicit drugs, predominantly among youth aged 17 and above.

Despite the escalation, NACOC in the region has pledged commitment to tackling the drug menace through coordinated prevention and education programs, intelligence-led operations, and targeted surveillance actions.

The Commission has assisted hundreds of individuals suffering from substance use disorders with treatment and rehabilitation services.

NACOC plans to conduct special intelligence-led operations to dismantle the illicit drug business across the region and form Drug-Free Clubs in selected schools.

These clubs will provide a platform for students to share experiences and serve as peer educators on drugs.

The regional commander has called for public collaboration in the fight against drugs, emphasizing that it’s a collective responsibility.

PNCO Owusu Sarpong also advocates for the establishment of a well-resourced treatment and rehabilitation center to address the gap in services.

The Commission warns that individuals found guilty of planting, selling, or consuming illicit drugs could face imprisonment of not less than 10 years, a fine, or both.

The acting president of Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng II, has advised parents to monitor their wards against peer influence that could lead them to become addicted to drugs and invest in their education.
