Eight BECE Candidates Injured in Fatal Accident
A tragic road accident has left eight Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates from Nangbagu Yapala M/A JHS in the Northern Region injured, while a motorcyclist lost his life.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when the tricycle carrying the students collided with a motorbike about 5km from the Tamale Secondary School (Tamasco) examination centre.
According to Abdulai Mohammed, a supervisor accompanying the students, the tricycle’s steering reportedly locked, causing the rider to lose control and crash into the motorbike.

“The crash happened suddenly, and we had to find another means to take them to the Tamale West Hospital,” Mr. Mohammed said.
Despite receiving medical attention, the students were unable to sit for the exam as they arrived after the first paper had ended.

“When we got to the centre, the first paper was over, and the other students were coming out.

We pleaded for our students to be allowed to write, but they were denied,” Mr. Mohammed added.
The news devastated the students, with some collapsing upon being told they couldn’t write the paper.
“As we speak, they’ve been rushed back to the hospital,” Mr. Mohammed said.

The incident has sparked concern among community members and education stakeholders, who are calling for immediate support and redress for the affected students. The use of tricycles, also known as “motorkings,” to transport passengers is a common practice in Ghana, despite being prohibited due to safety risks.

As the community rallies around the affected students, there are growing concerns about the need for safer transportation options and the potential consequences of this incident on the students’ academic futures.
