Two In Critical Condition After Drunk Driver Knocks Them Down At Sokoban

Sokoban — Two persons are battling for their lives at the Asafo Agyei Hospital after they were knocked down by a speeding private vehicle at Sokoban in the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The accident, which occurred last night, involved a private vehicle with registration number *GE 461-15*, which was allegedly being driven at top speed by a suspected drunk driver.

The driver, whose name has been withheld, has since been arrested.

Confirming the incident, the Assembly Member for the Sokoban-Daban Electoral Area, Hon. Kwadwo Boateng, who led the arrest of the driver, said the victims were hit while by the roadside.

According to him, the suspect was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

Hon. Boateng expressed worry over the increasing rate of pedestrian knockdowns in the area, lamenting the failure of authorities to act on petitions to construct speed ramps and barricades along the stretch.

He disclosed that his office, together with residents, has on several occasions petitioned the Department of Feeder Roads and the Member of Parliament for the area to support the construction of speed ramps and roadside barricades to reduce speeding and protect lives, but all efforts have not yielded any positive results.

“Several people have died through similar pedestrian knockdowns in this area. We have cried to the authorities for speed ramps but nobody listens to us until another life is lost,” Hon. Boateng lamented.

He is therefore appealing to the relevant authorities to as a matter of urgency intervene to prevent further loss of lives on the Sokoban road.

Meanwhile, police have commenced investigations into the incident, while the two victims remain in critical condition at the hospital.
