Abesim Maternity Block Commissioned to Boost Maternal Care in Sunyani Municipality
Residents of Abesim and surrounding communities in the Sunyani Municipality now have improved access to maternal healthcare following the commissioning of a new maternity block at the Abesim Health Centre.
The facility was officially commissioned on Thursday, July 2, and is expected to bring essential delivery and antenatal services closer to residents of Abesim and nearby suburbs.
The project was initiated during the reign of the late Abesimhene, Nana Kumi Acheaw II, and was completed by his successor, Barima Kumi Acheaw III, after he assumed the throne.
Speaking at the ceremony, Medical Superintendent of Abesim Health Centre, Dr. Derek Kumi-Acheampong, appealed for additional medical supplies and infrastructure to meet growing demand.
He said the centre urgently needs patient monitors, beds for the emergency unit, equipment for the theatre, anaesthesia machines, and a haematology analyser, among others.
According to Dr. Kumi-Acheampong, meeting these needs will improve healthcare delivery and support the facility’s bid to attain polyclinic status.
The Chief of Abesim, Barima Kumi Acheaw III, also expressed concern over what he described as lack of government support for the health centre.
He said almost all developmental initiatives and medical supplies at the facility have been provided through efforts by community members and other benevolent individuals.
He described the Abesim Health Centre as “orphaned” due to limited support from government and the Municipal Health Directorate.
Despite the challenges, the chief pledged to provide air conditioners for the newly commissioned maternity block, the medical laboratory, and other areas of need. He further called on members of the Abesim diaspora to support the facility with resources.
Health officials say the new maternity block will reduce referrals to Sunyani and ease pressure on expectant mothers who previously had to travel long distances for delivery services.
