Majority Leader Ayariga Warns LGBTQ Individuals to “Change Behaviour” as Parliament Passes Anti-LGBTQ Bill

Accra — The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in LGBTQ practices, urging them to desist or face the full force of the law once the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025 is signed by President John Dramani Mahama.

His remarks came on Eyewitness News on Friday, May 29, 2026, hours after Parliament passed the controversial legislation following extensive debate and consideration of multiple amendments.

The bill, which seeks to regulate matters of human sexual rights and family values, has been among the most contested pieces of legislation in recent years.

It drew strong backing from sponsors in Parliament and firm opposition from rights advocacy groups.

Speaking on the implications of the bill, Mr. Ayariga said persons identifying as LGBTQ would be required to alter their behaviour once the law takes effect.

“You will have to change. That’s the response I will give to that person,” he stated. “If you’re a boy, you shouldn’t be wearing the dresses of girls around town… if you know that you’ve been practising LGBTQ in this country, with this bill having been passed today, immediately it is assented to by the President, you will have to change.”

He stressed that enforcement will begin immediately after President Mahama grants presidential assent.

While issuing the warning, Mr. Ayariga also cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands.

He emphasized that the bill does not sanction violence or attacks on suspected persons.

“Mob action is seriously frowned upon in the bill, and indeed, it has very serious consequences. Anybody attacking, assaulting, lynching any person accused or suspected of practicing LGBTQ will be punished even more than the practitioners of LGBTQ,” he said.

The Majority Leader described the passage of the bill as a “turning point” for Ghana’s legal stance on sexual rights and family values.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025 now awaits presidential assent to become law.
