Minority Slams NDC Over Alleged Backdoor Return of E-Levy

Parliament, April 28, 2026 – The Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused the NDC government of political dishonesty for what it calls a backdoor reintroduction of the Electronic Levy, after campaigning on its cancellation.

Addressing a brief press conference in Parliament, Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin said it would be “politically dishonest” for the government to bring back the E-levy following its promise to scrap the tax.

“The NDC went to the people and said the E-levy must go. It was cancelled. Now the same government is sneaking it back through the backdoor. That is not the change Ghanaians voted for,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He also accused the administration of repeating practices it criticized while in opposition. According to the Minority Leader, the NDC campaigned against corruption and sole-sourced contracts under the previous government, but has since engaged in the same after winning power.

“We warned that the rhetoric would not match the reality. Today, sole sourcing and questionable contracts are back on the table,” he added.

The Minority said it will resist any attempt to reimpose the levy without broad consultation and transparency.

The government is yet to respond to the claims.
