Chaos at Afari Military Hospital as Soldiers Block Minority MPs from Parliament’s Health Committee
Ashanti Region, Ghana– A tense standoff erupted at the Afari Military Hospital on Wednesday when soldiers reportedly blocked Minority members of Parliament’s Health Committee from accessing sections of the facility during an oversight inspection.
The MPs said they were at the hospital to assess progress on the long-delayed project and perform their constitutional oversight duties.
Military personnel on site, however, insisted that access to certain areas required prior authorization, and denied entry when the MPs could not produce it on the spot.
Witnesses described a heated confrontation at the gate as both sides stood their ground. The MPs argued that Parliament’s oversight mandate allows them access to public projects without additional clearance, while the soldiers maintained they were following standard security protocols for a military installation.
No injuries were reported during the encounter, and the situation was eventually de-escalated. The committee left without inspecting the disputed sections.
The incident has reignited public debate over the Afari Military Hospital, a flagship health infrastructure project that has faced years of delays.
Residents and health advocates say the latest clash highlights broader concerns about transparency and the slow pace of operationalisation.
Parliament’s Health Committee is yet to issue an official statement on next steps, while military authorities have also not commented publicly on the authorization requirements.
