Free SHS Is Suffering Under NDC – Dr. Bawumia

By Dominic Duut|Noblenews

Former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says the Free Senior High School policy is suffering under the National Democratic Congress government.

Dr. Bawumia made the remarks during his address at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

According to him, the NDC in opposition promised to improve the quality of meals for students under the Free SHS programme, but the situation has rather deteriorated since they assumed office.

He also alleged that many Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates are being deliberately denied placement under Free SHS, with parents being told their wards have failed woefully.

Dr. Bawumia further criticised the NDC for failing to honour its promise to abolish the double-track system introduced by the NPP to manage enrolment under Free SHS.

On the economy, the former Vice President said the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme left by the NPP is now recording unprecedented losses, and that despite the cedi’s stability, businesses continue to struggle, prices of goods keep rising and the cost of living is increasing.

He added that the Agenda 111 hospital project, designed to provide hospitals for districts without them, has stalled under the current government.

“The Agenda 111 programme designed to provide districts without much needed hospitals has stalled. The NPP would have completed these hospitals to provide jobs if it were in government by now,” he said.
