C/R: Teacher Unions Insist Strike Continues, Demand Gov’t Address Conditions Of Service

Teacher unions in the Central Region have reaffirmed their support for the ongoing nationwide strike by pre-tertiary teachers, dismissing rumours of a suspension.
At a joint press conference by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) held on Friday, October 2, 2026 at the Central Regional GNAT Hall in Cape Coast, the unions said unresolved issues affecting teachers remain unattended to.
Central Regional Secretary of GNAT, Mr. Ajono Martin Adonis, said the Conditions of Service for Ghana Education Service staff expired in June 2026, yet challenges facing teachers continue to receive inadequate attention.
He called on government to automatically place newly promoted teachers on their appropriate salary scales, noting that some teachers who sat for the promotion aptitude test in December 2025 and February 2026 are yet to be captured.
Mr Adonis added that government since 2024 agreed to a 20 percent salary increment for teachers in remote and deprived areas, but the increment is yet to be implemented.
He also urged the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to reconsider its requirement for teachers due for promotion to produce hard copies of promotional letters and input forms before their promotions are effected on the payroll.
Meanwhile, Central Regional Chairman of CCT-GH, Mr. Eric Kow Asante, said the unions remain resolute and will not suspend the strike until government satisfactorily addresses their concerns.
