Court Issues Bench Warrant For Arrest Of NDC Aspirant Over Alleged GH¢15,000 Scholarship Scam

The Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Martin Acheampong, an aspiring Vice-Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Old Tafo Constituency, for failing to appear before the court.

The warrant was issued by the presiding judge, His Lordship Simon Nketiah Gagah, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Owusu Kobi Moses, the complainant, Augustine Wewali, is a teacher at Odiko Boatema Senior High School and a resident of Old Daamang, Mampong.

The court heard that the complainant belongs to several WhatsApp platforms through which he receives professional information.

The accused was also a member of one of the platforms, where he allegedly advertised his affiliation with the NDC and claimed he had been assigned to work with the Scholarship Secretariat, assuring teachers seeking further studies that he could help them secure scholarships.

In January 2026, the complainant gained admission to pursue a Master’s degree at Bangor University in the United Kingdom and contacted the accused for assistance.

The prosecution said the accused demanded GH¢30,000 as the total fee, but asked for GH¢15,000 upfront as a processing fee, with the balance to be paid when the scholarship was ready.

He subsequently provided a mobile money number, 0248048520, registered in the name of Seth Bawa, for payment.

On March 11, 2026, the complainant allegedly transferred GH¢15,000 to the said number, which the accused acknowledged.

However, the accused allegedly failed to deliver on the promise, resorted to excuses, and eventually blocked the complainant’s phone number.

On October 5, 2026, the complainant reported the matter to the police. When contacted and asked to report to the police, the accused allegedly refused and told officers to use any lawful means to secure his arrest.

The court expressed displeasure over the accused’s failure to appear and issued a bench warrant directing the prosecution to secure his arrest.

The case has been adjourned to October 30, 2026.
