Ahafo Region Resetting Tour: Mahama Inspects 50% Complete Bechem Poultry Factory, Tips Town As Ghana’s Poultry Hub

President John Dramani Mahama says Bechem in the Ahafo Region is on course to become Ghana’s chicken capital with the construction of a major poultry and meat processing factory in the town.

The President made the remarks during an inspection of the factory on Friday, October 9, 2026, as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Ahafo Region.

According to President Mahama, work on the factory is currently about 50 percent complete and is scheduled for completion next year.

He encouraged the youth in Bechem and surrounding communities to take advantage of government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme to go into poultry farming, assuring them of a guaranteed market.

He noted that the factory will also provide an opportunity for traders to buy chicken in bulk for retail, a move he said will create jobs and expand local businesses.

On his part, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, disclosed that Ghana’s poultry production has grown from 4.6 percent to 22 percent as of May 2026, barely a year after the rollout of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative.

He said the programme has significantly boosted egg production, leading to a surplus that has enabled Ghana to export eggs to Burkina Faso.

Hon. Opoku added that the impact is already being felt in the local market, with eggs now more available and relatively affordable for consumers.
