E/R: Two Brothers Drown In Abandoned Galamsey Pit At Akyem Nsutam

Two brothers have drowned in an abandoned illegal mining pit at Akyem Nsutam in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The deceased have been identified as 10-year-old Amiatey, a pupil of Madam Eva Preparatory School, and his 11-year-old brother, Apaatey, a pupil of SDA Basic School at Akyem Nsutam.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m.

Community members retrieved one of the bodies shortly after the incident, while the second body was recovered on Wednesday, October 7.

According to their father, Mr. Apiatyvi, the family had gone to the farm when he asked his two sons to return home because it was getting late, adding that he intended to follow them shortly afterwards. He said he was later informed that his sons had drowned.

Residents are appealing to government and relevant authorities to reclaim abandoned illegal mining pits in the community to prevent similar tragedies.
