Ashanti Regional Teacher Unions Reaffirm Support For Nationwide Strike; Vow Not To Return To Classrooms Until Demands Are Met

The Ashanti Regional Secretariats of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) have reaffirmed their full support for the nationwide industrial strike action declared by their national leadership.

At a joint press conference held in Kumasi, the leadership of the three teacher unions in the region declared that teachers in the Ashanti Region will not return to their respective classrooms until their concerns are addressed and satisfactorily resolved.

According to the unions, the decision to embark on the strike follows the failure of government and relevant stakeholders to address their longstanding grievances, which include poor conditions of service, unpaid allowances, and other welfare issues affecting teachers at the pre-tertiary level.

They stressed that the industrial action is legal and justified, and called on all teachers in both public basic and second-cycle institutions across the region to strictly comply with the directive and stay away from school.

The Regional leadership further urged parents and students to bear with them, noting that their action is in the interest of improving the quality of education and the welfare of teachers who are at the centre of its delivery.

They warned that any attempt to intimidate or victimize any teacher for complying with the strike directive will be strongly resisted.

Meanwhile, the unions have called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to as a matter of urgency engage their national leadership to resolve the impasse to pave the way for academic work to resume.
