Abofour Old Town Youths Lead Massive Desilting Exercise To Prevent Flooding
By Dominic Duut – Abofour, Ashanti Region
A youth group calling itself the “Old Town Youths” in Abofour in the Offinso South Municipality of the Ashanti Region has embarked on a massive clean-up exercise to address sanitation challenges and prevent flooding in the area.
With sanitation as their core concern, the group, made up of energetic young men and women who have Abofour Old Town at heart, took it upon themselves to desilt all choked gutters connecting to the Odem River.
According to the group, the exercise was aimed at ensuring the free flow of water into the river to reduce the perennial flooding that affects residents during the rainy season.
As part of the exercise, they also cleared weeds and filth around the Odem River to restore it to its proper state and ensure the entire area is clean and healthy for residents.
The leader of the group said they can no longer wait for authorities while their community gets flooded and polluted, hence their decision to act voluntarily to save their community.
They have therefore called on government, municipal authorities, Nananom, other youth organisations and benevolent individuals to come to their aid with tools, support and to intensify communal labour and sanitation education in the area.
Residents of Abofour Old Town have commended the youth for their selfless and exemplary communal spirit and appealed to the Offinso South Municipal Assembly to support them to sustain the initiative.
