More than 900 people have died in road crashes across Ghana between January and August 2026, with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) describing the crashes as largely preventable.

According to the MTTD, about 9,000 preventable crashes involving approximately 15,000 vehicles of all categories were recorded during the eight-month period, leaving close to 11,000 people with injuries of varying degrees. 7551

Director of Research, Education and Training at the MTTD, ACP Alexander Obeng, disclosed the figures in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV’s _A Question of Law_ on Monday, September 28.

“Between January and August, we can report that we have recorded about 9,000 preventable crashes involving about 15,000 vehicles of all categories and models, with about 11,000 Ghanaians having sustained various degrees of injury as a result of these preventable crashes,” ACP Obeng said.

He said the figures should serve as a wake-up call for greater caution and responsibility among all road users — drivers, vehicle owners, passengers, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

ACP Obeng stressed that reducing the carnage would require a combination of proactive measures, including sustained road safety education, and reactive interventions to minimise the consequences of crashes when they occur.

The revelation comes ahead of the rollout of the Ghana Police Service’s new digital traffic enforcement system, TRAFFITECH-GH, from October 1, 2026, which is expected to automate enforcement and reduce human interference.
