Zuarungu SHS Closed Indefinitely After Violent Clashes
The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has ordered the indefinite closure of Zuarungu Senior High School following violent clashes between Gurune (Frafra) and Kusasi students on July 20, 2025.
The conflict was sparked by an alleged mobile phone theft and escalated into a major brawl, resulting in the burning of school structures and heightened tensions on campus.
Four students were arrested in connection with the incident, but one suspect escaped while being transported to the police station, allegedly seizing a police officer’s magazine during the escape.
To prevent reprisal attacks, a joint team of police and military personnel has been deployed to escort students from Bawku back to their hometown under heavy security.
Authorities are working to restore calm as investigations continue into the incident. The closure of the school is aimed at preventing further violence and ensuring the safety of students and staff. The incident has raised concerns about the impact of the Bawku conflict on regional stability.
