W/R: Over 20 slums demolished in Kwesimintsim amid growing concern over social vices.
Over 20 makeshift structures believed to be hotspots for drug trafficking, prostitution, and other criminal activities have been destroyed by some youths of Kwesiminstin in the Western region.
The operation led to the discovery of hard drugs and dangerous weapons hidden within the structures.
While largely successful, the youth faced stiff resistance from some occupants who attempted to prevent the demolition of their hideouts.
The move comes as health authorities raise concern over a rise in HIV infections in the Western Region, despite a national decline. The regional rate has climbed from 1.55% to 1.62%, prompting calls for intensified public health and security interventions.
Authorities in the region plan to scale up such exercises.Mayor of STMA, Fredrick Faidoo, hinted at plans to replicate such clean-up exercises in other parts of the metropolis considered high-risk zones for crime and disease transmission.
“Based on information gathered on illicit activities at an unauthorized settlement behind the Sawmill at Kokompe in Takoradi, paid a fact finding visit to the area.”
“The visit was to provide for METSEC, a firsthand appreciation of the situation in the area and to aid us take the right decisions that should enable a clamp down on illicit activities of miscreants in the area. Based on the report of our visit, METSEC will soon meet and take a decision on the next line of action on the matter, we will clear the city of riff -faffs, “he said
Meanwhile, many residents have applauded such exercise describing it as a much needed step in reclaiming the area from the grip of lawlessness.
