Tragedy Strikes Mpasatia: Woman Dies in Abandoned Mining Pit.

A 50-year-old woman, identified as Auntie Akos, has lost her life after accidentally falling into an abandoned mining pit in the Mpasatia community.

The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, the deceased was engaged in illegal mining activities when she slipped and fell into the unused pit.

She was quickly rescued and rushed to the Frimpong Boateng Clinic at Toase, but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.

Her body has since been deposited at the Toase Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Local authorities have cautioned illegal miners to stay away from abandoned pits, citing the growing number of casualties linked to such dangerous sites.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of mining activities in the area. Many people have tragically lost their lives after falling into mining pits in the region since the beginning of the year.

In a related development, chiefs and residents of Manso Tontokrom in the Amansie South District are calling on the government to urgently fulfill its promise of establishing a community mining scheme in the area.

They believe this will resolve years of tension between the community and Asanko Mines, accused of encroaching on disputed lands.

The community is urging the government to act swiftly, arguing that a community-led mining scheme would bring jobs, reduce conflict, and ensure fair resource benefits for locals.

The Mamanhene, Nana Adu Gyamfi, has appealed to the Asantehene and the government to intervene and prevent further clashes.

Tensions remain high between the community and Asanko Mines, with armed security forces guarding the contested site.

Residents have hinted at plans to petition appropriate quarters to prevent any disturbances and will soon submit a formal petition to all relevant authorities, demanding immediate action against the unjustified deployment of military personnel to intimidate their community.

Management of Asanko mines insists on their right to the disputed land but has stated they will respond to the accusations at the right time.
