Tafo MP Defends Cancellation of PTA Activities, Cites Threat to Free SHS Policy
The Member of Parliament for Tafo in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Vincent Ekow Assafuah has justified the decision by the Ministry of Education to suspend the activities of Parent-Teacher associations (PTAs) in senior high schools.
According to the MP, PTA activities were increasingly becoming a hindrance and appeared to undermine the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy introduced by the previous administration led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo .
He explained that some PTA decisions and levies placed additional financial burdens on parents, which contradicted the core objective of the Free SHS programme—making secondary education truly accessible to all.
Mr. Assafuah, a former spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, maintained that the suspension was necessary to protect the integrity and effectiveness of the policy.
He added that while PTAs have traditionally played a supportive role in schools, reforms were needed to ensure their activities align with national education goals.
