SAD NEWS: Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings Passes Away

 

Ghana woke up to the sad news of the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

According to reports, she died at the Ridge Hospital in Accra on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the age of 76.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a pioneering figure in Ghanaian politics and a champion of women’s rights.

She served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001 and was the founder and leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP).

She also established the 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM) in 1982, an initiative aimed at empowering Ghanaian women through entrepreneurship, education, and political participation.

The former First Lady was known for her tireless advocacy for women’s empowerment and her leadership in promoting women’s rights.

She made history in 2016 by becoming the first woman to contest for the presidency of Ghana, running on the ticket of the NDP.

Details surrounding her passing are still emerging, and the family is yet to release an official statement. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ passing has sent shockwaves across Ghana, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, civil society groups, and international partners.
