Residents of Kantu Cry for Urgent Govt Intervention Over Water, Roads.

WA WEST DISTRICT — Residents of Kantu, a farming community in the Wa West District, are appealing for urgent government intervention over critical infrastructure gaps they say are crippling daily life and livelihoods.

The community has lacked access to potable water for over two years after local boreholes broke down. Residents now depend on a river roughly 20 kilometers away, raising health and sanitation concerns.

“Our community has been without clean water for over two years. We now fetch water from a river far from here, which is affecting the health of both adults and children,” resident Yirinebe Tabere said.

Beyond water, poor roads are another major burden. Tuobare Sobelle, also a resident, said a district assembly road project stalled mid-way, leaving the community with difficult transport links. The situation is worse during emergencies and has hit farmers hard.

“The bad roads hinder farmers from transporting their produce to markets, thereby affecting their livelihoods,” Sobelle noted.

Chief of Kantu, Naa Donlere Pie-Oro Kantu, expressed grave concern over the absence of basic services despite the community’s participation in national elections. He listed water, roads, and healthcare as urgent needs.

He called on government and stakeholders to prioritize development initiatives in Kantu and urged the Wa West District Assembly to engage residents more regularly to plan and implement impactful projects.
