Policeman Stabbed by Suspected Criminal at Lower McCarthy Hill

A policeman identified as Sammy was stabbed by a suspected criminal at Lower McCarthy Hill in Accra on Monday morning.

The incident occurred when Sammy, who was in plain clothes, was accompanying his children to school around 7 am.

The suspect, reportedly a known “wee” smoker in the area, attacked Sammy with a knife after spotting him.

This wasn’t the first encounter between the two, as the policeman had previously confronted and warned the suspect to desist from his nefarious activities. Unhappy about the caution, the suspect decided to attack Sammy.

In an attempt to disarm the suspect, Sammy fired several shots at close range, but the bullets didn’t hit the target, allegedly due to the suspect’s “black power” or juju.

A struggle ensued, during which the suspect tried to take Sammy’s pistol away. Unfortunately, Sammy was stabbed in the right rib during the scuffle. The suspect fled the scene after the stabbing.

Quartey, an eyewitness, described the suspect as a criminal who often harassed residents and disturbed the peace with his friends on motorbikes.

“Sometimes he would come with some boys on motorbikes, disturbing everybody,” Quartey said.

Sammy is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Accra, where he’s recovering from the stabbing.

The police have confirmed the incident and are investigating the matter. Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, confirmed the incident to Graphic Online’s Emmanuel Bonney.
