‎POLICE ARREST 79 AFTER MINERS’ RIOTS IN CHINGOLA; ONE DEAD, SEVERAL INJURED

‎Police on the Copperbelt have arrested 79 suspects following violent riots by informal miners in Chingola District on Wednesday, 30th July 2025.

‎The clashes left one person dead and several others injured, including seven police officers.

‎Rae Hamoonga, the Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the unrest began after a group of angry small-scale miners locally known as “Jeraboos”protested their recent displacement from the Senseli Open Pit.

‎The situation quickly turned violent, with rioters destroying property and attacking businesses in Chiwempala, Lulamba, and Mwaiseni areas.

‎Tragically, 22-year-old M’Bwalya Nsanda was shot dead during the chaos. Three others, including a 13-year-old boy, were wounded.

‎Seven police officers were also hurt while trying to control the crowds. Assistant Superintendent James Lwanja suffered head injuries, while Constable Onongani Phiri was struck by stones. Most injured officers are now recovering in Nchanga North Hospital.

‎The rioters vandalized the Mathews Nkhuwa Police Post, damaging 11 parked vehicles. Nearby, a compactor and grader used for road construction were set on fire.

‎Several businesses were looted, including Antelope Milling Retail Shop and Termites Butchery. Police have since recovered some stolen items, such as bags of mealie meal and bicycles.

‎Mr. Hamoonga stated that calm has now returned to Chingola, with officers remaining on high alert.

‎”We warn anyone planning such violence that the law will deal with them firmly,” he said.

‎The 79 suspects will face charges including rioting, theft, and assaulting police officers.
