Minority Calls for Transition Period Before Cancelling 1D1F Project
The Minority in Parliament is urging the government to provide a transition period before cancelling the One District One Factory (1D1F) project, a flagship initiative introduced by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
Hon. Okyere Baafi, Ranking Member on the Trade and Industry Committee, emphasized that the government cannot abruptly cancel the project, given its significant progress.
Out of 322 1D1F companies, 169 have been completed and are operational. These companies have made substantial investments and are contributing to the country’s economic growth.
The Minority argues that cancelling the project without a transition period would disrupt the operations of these companies and potentially lead to job losses.
The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has confirmed that the 1D1F program has been discontinued and replaced with the 24-Hour Economy Policy.
The new policy aims to stimulate economic activity around the clock, focusing on agro-processing parks and industrial productivity.
The Minority is seeking a transitional period to allow companies under the 1D1F program to adjust to the new policy framework.
This would enable them to continue operating without disruptions and minimize potential losses. The government is currently in talks with stakeholders to assess the implications of the 1D1F program’s cancellation.
The fate of the 1D1F project hangs in the balance as the government considers the Minority’s call for a transition period. The outcome will have significant implications for the companies involved and the broader economy.
