Methodist Bishop Claims Politics Delaying LGBTQ+ Bill, Cites Foreign Influence
Obuasi, Ghana – The Bishop of the Obuasi Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, Rt. Rev. Baffour Asamoah Agyei, says political considerations are blocking the passage of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Speaking at the 14th Biennial Diocesan Conference of the Methodist Guild on Saturday, held at Brahabebobome Methodist Church in Obuasi, the Bishop argued that the bill has become a political tool and will not be signed by the current president.
He further claimed the previous government also failed to sign the bill due to Ghana’s financial ties to countries where LGBTQ+ practices are legal. According to Rt. Rev. Agyei, signing the bill could jeopardize loans and aid from those nations.
LGBTQ+ issues remain deeply divisive in Ghana, drawing strong reactions from religious leaders, youth groups, and human rights advocates. Guild Supports Orphaned Student’s Education
At the same conference, Obuasi Diocesan Guild Chairman Brother Bernard Obed Bansah announced that the guild has invested in the education of Bright Kwame Dua, a boy who lost his mother.
Bansah said the financial support is intended to see Dua through his full education journey.
Dua, who was present at the event, thanked the guild for the intervention, calling it a major boost to his academic future.
