Mental Health Challenges Require National Attention – Lydia Abena Maanu
The escalating trend of mental health challenges has become a significant concern globally, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) warning about the importance of managing stress and substance abuse. According to the WHO, about 13% of the global population is affected by mental health problems annually.
Madam Lydia Abena Maanu, Founder of Willing-way Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre, has called for a collective effort to address the issue.
Speaking during a sensitisation program for inmates at the Kumasi Central Prisons, she emphasized the need for the country to give mental health issues the attention they deserve.
Madam Lydia Abena Maanu advised Ghanaians to set realistic goals and live within their means to avoid unnecessary pressure that leads to stress.
“Live a stress-free life,” she urged. She also advocated for regular emotional and psychological support for inmates, citing the underlined pressure mounted on prisoners.
Ashanti regional Coordinator for the Mental Health Authority, Madam Faustina Nuako, echoed similar sentiments, urging the public, especially the youth, to adopt manageable lifestyles.
“Live a manageable lifestyle,” she advised, noting that too much stress can lead to mental problems.
