Market Fires: GNFS Adopts Competitive Learning Strategy to Boost Trader Awareness in Ashanti
In an innovative shift from conventional public education, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Ashanti Region is leveraging competitive learning to deepen fire safety awareness among traders in major markets.

The initiative, structured as an inter-market quiz, is gradually gaining attention as a practical and engaging approach to tackling the recurring menace of fire outbreaks in commercial centres.
The exercise, which debuted at the Kejetia Market, has now advanced to Breman in the Suame Municipality. The latest edition brought together traders from Mamponteng, Asawase, and surrounding communities, creating a platform not only for competition but also for practical learning.

Speaking to journalists, Ashanti Regional Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Peter Tetteh, explained that the programme is part of a deliberate effort to move beyond routine sensitisation campaigns and adopt more participatory methods that ensure better retention of safety knowledge.
He indicated that the quiz format encourages active involvement, allowing traders to engage directly with real-life fire scenarios, prevention techniques, and emergency responses.

According to him, markets remain highly exposed to fire risks due to their congested nature and the widespread use of electrical appliances under often unsafe conditions. He stressed that bridging the knowledge gap among traders is critical to reversing the trend.
“This approach makes the learning process more interactive and impactful. It ensures that participants do not just listen, but understand and apply fire safety principles,” he noted.
Local authorities and traders have lauded the initiative for its relevance and practicality.

The Assembly Member for Breman West, Joshua Enning Takyi, described the programme as a forward-thinking intervention that has the potential to significantly reduce fire incidents if sustained.
Some traders who participated in the exercise also acknowledged the importance of the initiative, noting that it has enhanced their understanding of fire prevention and emergency handling.

The GNFS says the programme will be expanded to other market centres across the region, as part of a long-term strategy to promote safety consciousness and protect lives and property within Ghana’s trading hubs.
