Local Languages Now Compulsory in Basic Schools – Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the use of local languages as a medium of instruction is now compulsory in all basic schools across Ghana.

This directive aims to improve teaching and learning outcomes at the foundational level.

Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disability initiative, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized the importance of using mother tongue instruction to enhance learning.

He recounted a story of a child struggling to understand English and appealed to the Ghana Education Service to strictly enforce the directive.

The Minister also highlighted the significance of the Free Tertiary Education initiative, which is expected to cost the state and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) about GHS 31 million.

He assured that President John Dramani Mahama is committed to expanding access to quality education and has directed that a $30 million Chinese grant be used to establish a Science University in Damongo.

Additionally, two new technical universities will be established in Jasikan and Techiman. The initiative aims to promote inclusivity and give true meaning to the belief that disability is not inability.
