Health Alert: Dangers of Serving Hot Foods in Polythene Bags Exposed
The Kumasi Metro Education Directorate is sounding the alarm on the risks of serving hot foods in polythene bags, particularly to children.
According to a circular issued by STEM Coordinator Acheampong Atansah Andrew, the practice poses serious health and environmental concerns.
The use of polythene bags for hot foods can lead to chemical leaching, releasing harmful substances like bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates, which are linked to cancer risk, hormonal disruption, and brain and immune system damage.
Mr.Atansah Andrews Acheampong recommends switching to safer alternatives like stainless steel flasks, reusable containers, or biodegradable packaging.
Schools, parents, and community leaders are urged to promote awareness and adopt safer practices to protect children’s health and education.
According to Mr Andrew Attansah Acheampong, their move aims to reduce the impact of unhealthy packaging on academic performance and the environment, as discarded polythene bags contribute to clogged drains and toxic fumes when burned.
